I interviewed the CNO of Palmetto General Hospital, Ms. Barbara Vazquez. As a CNO she
is in charge of ensuring a safe care for patients and guiding the staff to do their best job.
1. When do you start your nursing career? What inspired you?
Ms. Vazquez started the inception of her career in 1990 as a Registered Cardiovascular
Invasive Specialist. She works in the Cardiac Cath Lab such as later her interest in the nursing
career. This job allows her some credits that used to the transition into the RN program. After her
graduation as a nurse, she stays in the Cardiac Lab to pay the dues for allowing her to the
opportunity to excel her studies. While working in the Lab. she completed the critical care
course. Ms. Vazquez loved the acuity of the patients (Vazquez, 2016) and her supervisor asked if
she wanted to work in CVICU mastering as well. No later was promoted to Director of
Cardiovascular Services at the Miami Heart Institute, which facility was purchased by Mount
Sinai Medical Center. Shortly she transferred to the Baptist Health of South Florida Organization
and was put through their extensive two-year Leadership Academy. She shadowed the Chief
Nursing Officer of South Miami Hospital for one year and was later offered the CNO position at
the main campus that is a flagship hospital with Magnet status.
2. Why a CNO?
Being the Chief Nursing Officer of any hospital today is very challenging. They have to do
the same or more than before with much fewer resources. But regardless, it is an incredibly
rewarding position that I am very proud to represent (Vazquez, 2016). The CNO position is the
culmination of the nursing career, and it is a place that cherishes respect every day. Ms. Vazquez
expressed the joy that feels teaching others and providing guidance and support to the
organization. The CNO probably has the most difficult job in the hospital. They are responsible
for ensuring all areas are performing within the regulations set forth by the licensing and
accrediting agencies.
3. As a multicultural organization, what challenges do we facing in this facility?
Palmetto General Hospital is an excellent example of a multicultural place, and it does have
its challenges just as any other facility. What the key to success is understanding the
multicultural sensitivity and diversity (Vazquez, 2016). It is important in leadership to be
respectful, fair and consistent.
4. How culturally diverse needs are met?
Continuous education meets the culturally diverse needs of the patients and employees. It is
important to understand why others are different and why certain things are important to them
(Vazquez, 2016). Nursing is now faced with a more holistic care that includes the body, mind,
and soul, spiritual and cultural belief of the patient and as a healthcare provider, it is vital to be
able to understand these needs.
5. How does your role in the organization influence healthcare policy?

Ms. Vazquez role is influenced by health care policy. This policy refers to decisions, plans,
and actions that are undertaken to achieve specific health care goals within a society. A new
influence the organization has been the CMS bundled payment plans that have recently been put
in place with certain orthopedic procedures. This healthcare policy has changed the way that the
organization will get paid therefore influencing the care plan and allowable days allotted for
certain procedures. This, in turn, changes the methodology of the care provided by the ARNPs,
Nurses, Physical Therapy, and Physicians. Healthcare policies dictate the way that this hospital
operates.
6. What oversight agencies do you report to?
Palmetto General Hospital report to a lot of agencies, as an example: Agency for Healthcare
Administration (AHCA), Joint Commission (JCAHO), Department of State Health Services
(DSHS), Florida State of Board of Nursing (FBON), Center for Medicare and Medicaid
(CMS), FDA, NIH, NCHS, CLIA and more.
